Macao and Hong Kong authorities boost transport services for school reopening

Public transport authorities in Macao and Hong Kong have implemented measures to manage increased commuter demand following the start of the new school year.

In Macao, the first day of school saw relatively smooth traffic operations due to coordinated efforts between the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Transport Bureau, and police. Bus operators reported increased service, with morning peak-hour trips rising by 4% compared to the summer period. Macao Light Rapid Transit has also increased train frequencies to improve capacity. Authorities noted that while major roads remained functional, they advise parents and students to plan for off-peak travel to avoid congestion.

In Hong Kong, the Transport Department has raised its coordination center to the highest level of joint supervision to monitor traffic and public transport services. MTR Corporation is increasing staff at stations to assist passengers, and Light Rail has introduced a new 610P loop line in Tuen Mun to better serve students. Officials have urged students to allow extra travel time and to prioritize road safety by avoiding mobile phone use while crossing streets.
