Macau and Hong Kong increase health screenings after Russian lab death

Health authorities in Macau and Hong Kong have increased medical screening and surveillance for travelers arriving from Russia following the death of a researcher in Siberia due to pneumonia of unknown origin.

The incident occurred at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, Russia. According to the World Health Organization, the individual died on October 2 after being hospitalized for severe pneumonia. While pneumonic plague was suspected due to occupational exposure in a laboratory setting, the exact pathogen remains unidentified.

In Macau, the Health Services (SS) have implemented mandatory health declarations at major border crossings. Travelers who visited the Irkutsk region within the previous 14 days are urged to declare their history and cooperate with medical screenings. Individuals presenting suspicious symptoms will be transferred to public hospitals for further evaluation. Authorities noted that the immediate risk to Macau remains low.

Similarly, Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has stepped up temperature checks at flight gates and urged travelers from the Irkutsk Oblast to disclose their travel history. The CHP has also notified local doctors and hospitals to remain vigilant for respiratory symptoms in recent travelers. Russian authorities have reported that no recent biosecurity incidents or high-threat pathogen outbreaks have been registered in the region.
