Macau Diocese celebrates 450 years of Catholic heritage

The Diocese of Macau marked its 450th anniversary on October 31, 2026, with a concluding ceremony involving clergy and lay faithful. Established in 1576 by Pope Gregory XIII, the diocese was the first modern diocese in Asia and historically served as a central hub for Catholic missions expanding into China, Japan, and Korea.

The celebrations included a pontifical Mass presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle. The event also coincided with a meeting of the Federation of Asian Episcopal Conferences Social Communication Office (FABC-OSC). During the proceedings, Cardinal Tagle addressed contemporary challenges, including the risks posed by artificial intelligence and tribalism.

Bishop José Ornelas of Leiria-Fátima noted that Macau could serve as a vital space for diplomatic dialogue between China and the Vatican. He suggested that the region’s historical and scientific resources, such as those at the University of Saint Joseph, could facilitate cultural and historical understanding to help bridge gaps between the two entities.
