Macau hotel occupancy hits highest level since pre-pandemic

Macau's hotel and pension establishments recorded an average occupancy rate of 90.6% for the first seven months of the year, the highest level for that period since before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data from the Directorate of Statistics and Census (DSEC), this represents a 1.2 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Despite the higher occupancy rates, the total number of guests fell by 1.4% year-on-year to 8.37 million. This decline was primarily driven by a reduction in visitors from mainland China and Hong Kong. Conversely, international guest numbers rose by 12.2%, reaching 753,000.

As of late July, Macau had a record 149 hotels and pensions offering approximately 45,300 rooms. However, the simultaneous guest capacity decreased by 2,100 compared to July 2025. Data from the Macau Hotel Association suggests that a 2.7% decrease in average room prices, bringing the average to 1,287 patacas (approximately 137 euros), may have contributed to the increased occupancy levels.
