Macau positions itself as a strategic gateway for Lusophone markets

Macau is actively working to strengthen its role as a commercial and tourism gateway between China and Portuguese-speaking nations. During the 31st Macau International Fair (MIF) and the Exhibition of Products and Services from Portuguese-Speaking Countries (PLPEX), Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Ng Wai Han, emphasized leveraging China’s new phase of economic opening to consolidate the territory's position as a service platform for Lusophone markets.

Key areas for economic cooperation include cross-border e-commerce, the blue economy, and Sino-Lusophone agriculture. This strategy aligns with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which focuses on international investment and service trade. Recent government-led business missions have already targeted markets in Portugal and Spain to identify new opportunities.

In the tourism sector, Sands China is promoting Macau as a premier destination for Brazilian travelers, highlighting its high concentration of luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants. Following the sale of its Las Vegas assets in 2022, Sands China has shifted its strategic focus toward investing resources in the Asian market, including Macau and Hong Kong.
