Macauda beachgoers evacuated by sea following wildfire
A wildfire between San Giorgio and Macauda caused panic on local beaches, forcing dozens of people to flee. Many bathers were trapped by thick smoke and flames, seeking refuge in the sea or attempting to escape via paths that were blocked by the fire.
Due to zero visibility and debris on State Highway 115, ambulances were unable to reach the area by land. The Coast Guard conducted an emergency sea evacuation, transporting people to the port of Sciacca, where medical assistance was available. Many individuals arrived in shock and suffering from smoke inhalation. Local authorities are considering using a school and a public venue in San Giorgio as reception centers for those affected.
