MacBook Neo SSD lifespan concerns linked to 8GB RAM

Tests conducted by UFD Tech have identified potential SSD longevity issues in the Apple MacBook Neo, specifically regarding models equipped with 8GB of unified memory. Due to the limited RAM shared between the CPU and GPU, the macOS system frequently utilizes the SSD as virtual memory (swap file) to handle applications and browser tabs.

During testing simulating light daily use—including running Chrome, WhatsApp, and Discord—the device wrote nearly 900GB of data to the SSD in just three hours. For the 256GB model, which has a theoretical endurance of approximately 412TB, this high rate of writing could result in a theoretical lifespan of only 1,400 hours, or roughly 58 days of continuous use. The 512GB model performs better, with an estimated endurance of approximately 5,000 hours.

Because the SSD in the MacBook Neo is not replaceable, reaching the end of its write cycle limit could lead to high repair costs and data loss risks. Industry speculation suggests Apple may address this in future iterations, such as a MacBook Neo 2, by increasing base memory to 12GB.
