MacBook repurposing guide for home NAS servers
Older MacBooks can be repurposed as home Network Attached Storage (NAS) servers to serve as multimedia libraries, collaboration hubs, or backup storage solutions. To prepare a device, it should be factory reset and updated to the most stable version of macOS available.
For optimal performance, users are advised to use external storage drives due to the risk of disk failure in older hardware. A stable Ethernet connection to a router is recommended, and for Intel-based Macs with HDMI output, a dummy HDMI plug can be used to activate the GPU for better video performance. The free application Amphetamine can be utilized to prevent the system from entering sleep mode.
There are several implementation methods. The simplest approach uses macOS built-in file sharing settings, allowing access from Windows and Android devices via IP address. Alternatively, users can transform the device into a media server using software like Plex, Kodi, or Infuse. For more advanced users, installing Linux and open-source applications provides additional customization options.
