Maccheronis reservoir water levels trigger irrigation bans in Sardinia

The Maccheronis reservoir in Sardinia has reached critical lows, with water levels falling below 10% of its total capacity. Holding less than 2.2 million cubic meters, the dam can no longer support irrigation in the Alta Baronia and Bassa Gallura regions.

To prioritize civil uses—including drinking water, food production, hygiene, and livestock watering—the Consorzio di bonifica della Sardegna Centrale has ordered an immediate halt to irrigation water distribution. Exceptions may be granted for specialized greenhouses, nurseries, and orchards upon motivated request.

To maintain the municipal water treatment plant in Torpè, authorities are implementing a temporary water lifting system from the Posada River, a process expected to take approximately ten days. Local municipalities are being urged to prohibit non-essential water use, such as washing vehicles or watering private and public gardens. If conditions worsen, water supply may be restricted in several municipalities to prioritize Siniscola, Posada, Torpè, Budoni, and San Teodoro.
