Macedonia aims for energy self-sufficiency and lower costs

VMRO-DPMNE lawmaker Angelinka Petkova announced that the government is prioritizing domestic electricity production to ensure energy security and lower costs for citizens and businesses. While opposition claims suggest a 5% price hike, Petkova stated the actual increase is 2.28%, which she described as the lowest in Europe.

The government's strategy includes using new legislation to potentially reduce household electricity costs by 5% to 10% and implementing subsidies to protect citizens from price shocks. To reduce import dependency, the government aims for Macedonia to become a net exporter of electricity by the end of the year. In April, domestic production covered 88.8% of the country's total consumption.
