Macedonia and Thrace launch new hunting season with 35,000 hunters

The new hunting season has commenced in the Macedonia and Thrace regions of Greece, with approximately 35,000 hunters active across 63 local hunting associations. The number of hunting licenses remains consistent with the previous year.

Giannis Frangidis, a board member of the Macedonia-Thrace Hunting Federation, highlighted the Evros region and its Delta wetland as a significant area for biodiversity. He noted that the abundance of game in Evros attracts hunters from various European countries, suggesting the region has strong potential for developing hunting tourism similar to other parts of Europe.

The federation is currently focusing on three main objectives: conducting scientific population recordings of species such as partridges, quail, pigeons, hares, and wild boar; managing wild boar populations to mitigate damage to agricultural crops; and contributing to wildfire prevention through increased presence in natural areas. Additionally, recent legislative changes have allowed for the reopening of certain burned areas for activity sooner than the previous five-year restriction.
