Macedonia achieves first robot‑assisted prostate surgery

In Skopje’s Mother Teresa Clinical Center, part of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius, surgeons performed the country's first robot‑assisted urological operation. The procedure removed a prostate cancer tumor using the EdGe Medical robotic system.

The operation was led by urology specialist Dr. Victor Stankov and employed the Single‑Site technique, a single‑incision approach that offers greater precision, less trauma, reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery. It is reported as the first Single‑Site robot‑assisted surgery in Europe and the first of its kind in the wider Balkan region, and the technology may later be applied to gynecology and other surgical fields, marking a milestone for Macedonian public health.
