Macedonia's consumer basket reaches 68,500 denars, flagging cost pressure

The opposition Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), citing data from the Union of Trade Unions of Macedonia (SSM), says the minimum consumer basket for July 2026 totals 68,500 denars. Adding rent for a 60 m² apartment pushes the monthly requirement to 83,873 denars for a typical four‑person household. The breakdown shows over 25,000 denars spent on food and drinks, with additional costs for clothing, transport, utilities, health and education. SDSM argues that the minimum wage remains well below 600 euros and that average wages do not keep pace with rising living costs. The party also notes a decline of more than 60 % in investments, higher fuel and input prices for farmers, and a lack of government measures to protect households. It warns that further price hikes are expected in the upcoming autumn and winter periods, urging the VMRO‑DPMNE‑led government to act.
