Macedonia mourns death of Dr. Nikola Stojanovski, last WWII partisan and first multi‑party Assembly chair

Dr. Nikola Stojanovski, a 103‑year‑old Macedonian physician and veteran of the anti‑fascist resistance, died in February 2026. Born on 8 February 1923 in the village of Skachinci, Velesh, he took part in the March 1942 student strike against the imposition of the Bulgarian language and later joined the National Liberation War (NOБ).

He graduated from the Medical Faculty in Belgrade in 1952 and completed a paediatric specialization in Zagreb in 1958. Stojanovski spent his professional career as a paediatrician and director of the Velesh hospital, later earning the title of doctor of medical sciences. Politically, he became the oldest deputy in the first multi‑party parliament and, on 8 January 1991, chaired the constitutional session that inaugurated the new Assembly, serving until the election of Stojan Andov as president of the Assembly.

Beyond his parliamentary role, he led the Union of Macedonian Partisans for many years and remained an active public figure, attending state commemorations and historical events well after his centennial birthday.
