Macedonia probes missing €9 million EU sewage funds in Ali Ahmeti’s hometown

More than €9 million of European Union funding earmarked for a sewage system in Zajas, the hometown of DUI leader Ali Ahmeti, has not been accounted for. The project, which should have been completed by 2024, remains unfinished and officials have not clarified where the money went.

Journalist Driton Sulejmani of VЛЕН and VРЕДИ raised concerns about possible contracts with local firms linked to Ahmeti’s family and called for a full audit. The European Union’s ambassador, Mihalis Rokas, said the EU is collecting all documentation related to the project. Both the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Financial Police have been urged to expand the investigation.

The scandal highlights allegations of corruption surrounding a major public‑investment program and has prompted demands for greater transparency and accountability from Macedonian authorities.
