Macedonia prosecutor halts Mazut fuel investigation amid political pressure

Prosecutor Nenan Saveski said the investigation into the Mazut fuel at the Negotino power plant should be stopped because the evidence would not withstand a court review. He supported the decision of prosecutor Kolarević and noted surprise at the intensity of public reaction, emphasizing that no fuel quality limits were exceeded and no air‑pollution was recorded.

General Secretary of SDSM Aleksandar "Sasha" Dimitrijevic urged Saveski to summon Interior Minister Panche Toskovski to present the alleged evidence. Saveski added that the case could be reopened if new relevant facts emerge, a claim echoed by Toskovski, who said undisclosed evidence would be revealed. The controversy surrounds a halted €167 million proceeding and potential financial impact estimated at €880 million in electricity import costs if the plant remained inactive.
