Macedonia election code deadlock threatens EU funding

The ruling VMRO‑DPMNE party, led by Prime Minister Christian Micic, and opposition parties LSDM, Levica, BDI and SDSM are at an impasse over a new electoral code. The opposition demands the introduction of a single electoral district and other reforms, accusing the government of withdrawing from negotiations and shifting responsibility onto them. The government says it will consider any concrete proposals, especially on diaspora voting, and remains willing to adopt the opposition’s suggestions.

With only three days left before the deadline set by the EU‑backed Reform Agenda, the stalemate risks the loss of €4 million in EU development funds. Both sides have threatened to call a coordination meeting of all opposition parties to reach a common position before the deadline.
