Macedonia‑Greece gas interconnector set for completion next year

The gas interconnector linking North Macedonia and Greece is progressing on schedule and is expected to be finished within the next year. The 66.7‑km section on the Macedonian side began construction on 9 July 2025 and will initially transport 1.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, with the capacity to double to 3 billion cubic metres. The project, valued at about 3.7 billion denars (≈ 60 million EUR), is financed by loans from the European Investment Bank (28.9 million EUR) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (45 million EUR), plus a 12.5 million EUR EU IPA grant. Minister of Energy Sanja Božinovski described the interconnector as a strategic initiative that will enhance the country’s energy security, diversify supply sources, and integrate Macedonia into broader European gas corridors, including the regional “Vertical Gas Corridor” programme.
