Macedonian citizen investigated in 324 kg marijuana smuggling plot

A Macedonian citizen is under investigation and facing detention following a large-scale drug trafficking operation involving over 324 kilograms of marijuana. The investigation, led by the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office for Prosecution of Organized Crime and Corruption, reveals a scheme to transport narcotics from North Macedonia through Bulgaria and into Greece.

According to prosecutors, the suspect acquired a truck and trailer in early 2026 to transport recycled paper from North Macedonia toward Turkey. However, instead of proceeding to Turkey, the vehicle was diverted to a rented enclosed lot in Thessaloniki, Greece. There, the suspect allegedly coordinated with individuals already under investigation in Greece to hide the marijuana within specially prepared openings in the paper bales.

The drugs were discovered on August 14, 2026, during the Greek police operation known as ‘Vardarisi’. Authorities seized the total weight of 324 kilograms and 474 grams of marijuana from the trailer. Two suspects have already been detained in Greece, while the Macedonian national faces investigation due to risks of flight or interference with witnesses.
