Macedonian Constitutional Court flags non‑implementation of ruling protecting journalist Natasa Stojanovska

North Macedonia’s Constitutional Court determined that a prior decision by the Basic Civil Court of Skopje – and the Appellate Court – confirming a violation of journalist Natasa Stojanovska’s freedom of expression had not been implemented. The court notified the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Judicial Council, urging them to act without delay, identify responsibility and, where legal conditions are met, impose appropriate sanctions on the officials who failed to enforce the ruling. The case originates from the 27 April 2017 Assembly events, when journalists covering the session faced violence, threats and obstruction, infringing the public’s right to information. The Constitutional Court stressed that non‑implementation of a decision confirming a constitutional right cannot remain without institutional response and said it will monitor the actions of the Prosecutor’s Office and Judicial Council. Stojanovska’s legal team continues to seek protection, including possible recourse to the European Court of Human Rights if domestic remedies prove insufficient.
