Macedonian driver’s licences unrecognised in Italy

Italy has stopped recognising driver’s licences issued in North Macedonia. Rental‑car firms are refusing to rent vehicles to Macedonian tourists and expats who hold the new Macedonian licence, saying it is not listed in their verification catalogue.

Macedonian citizens living in Italy cannot exchange their licence for an Italian one without retaking the driving test, and the deadline to replace old licences bearing the “Republic of Macedonia” label is 1 January 2025. The problem stems from technical changes in the new Macedonian licence format rather than the country’s name change. Both governments are negotiating a new bilateral agreement to restore mutual recognition, with North Macedonian ministries stating they have fulfilled their obligations and awaiting final approval from Italian authorities.
