Macedonian experts warn against missed scalp protection in sunscreen use
Health professionals in North Macedonia say that while most people apply sunscreen to the face, shoulders and body, the scalp is often left unprotected. They note that UV exposure can damage the skin on the scalp and also weaken hair, causing dryness, breakage and loss of shine. Special UV‑protective sprays for hair and scalp are recommended because traditional lotions can appear greasy on hair.
The experts also explain that SPF numbers indicate the percentage of UVB rays blocked—SPF 15 blocks about 93%, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98%—so higher numbers give only a modest increase in protection. Proper application amount and frequent re‑application every two to three hours, especially after swimming, sweating or towel‑drying, are far more important than the SPF rating alone. Broad‑spectrum products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays are advised, along with complementary measures such as hats, sunglasses and shade.
