Macedonian Government’s Economic Measures Spark Price Hikes and Debt Concerns

Citizens in North Macedonia are reacting with fear to each new economic measure announced by Prime Minister Dimitar Mickoski. Promised cuts, such as a reduction in fuel excise duties, have been quickly followed by sharp increases in gasoline prices, prompting concerns that every announced “relief” actually results in a new financial blow to households.

The Finance Minister acknowledged that without a revised budget, serious problems could arise in paying salaries and pensions. Recent data show foreign direct investment has dropped by more than 60 %, while state debt has risen to over €2.5 billion, with new borrowing added in less than two years. The minimum wage is approaching 70,000 denars, yet price growth outpaces earnings, leaving many families unable to cover basic monthly expenses. The latest fuel price surge is expected to raise costs across transport, production, distribution and food sectors.
