Macedonian PM Christian Mitzkowski denies scrapping second pension pillar

Prime Minister Christian Mitzkowski said the government has made no announcement to abolish the second pension pillar and that no such decision is under consideration. He emphasized that the authorities are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the pension system to identify reforms that would ensure long‑term fiscal stability.

The audit by the State Audit Office highlighted that the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund (PIOM) has not consistently transferred funds to the private second‑pillar accounts within the legally required timeframes. Experts warned that demographic ageing and emigration are putting increasing pressure on the pension budget, and that any short‑term measures such as nationalising the second pillar would not solve underlying structural problems.
