Macedonian Prime Minister Mikoski Pushes Early Election Amid Economic Crisis

Opposition SDSM secretary for international cooperation Andrej Jeronski told a press conference that Prime Minister Christian Mikoski, who for months insisted there would be no snap election, now says one will be held “very soon.” Jeronski argued the move is meant to conceal an empty state treasury and a deepening economic downturn.

He cited a 60 %+ plunge in foreign investment, a 22 % rise in poverty, and cuts to agricultural subsidies amounting to €40 million, while purchase prices for produce have fallen by 46 %. Wages are not keeping pace with inflation, and many young people are leaving the country. Jeronski also linked Mikoski’s shift to broader regional trends, noting similar political fallout in Hungary and Serbia.

According to the opposition, Mikoski’s support is eroding – he allegedly lost about 150,000 votes in recent polls and his approval rating is falling sharply. The SDSM said it will not act as an “alibi” for any premature election.
