Macedonian prosecutor Islam Abazi blasted for dropping 167‑million‑euro Mazut fraud case

The VMRO‑DPMNE party says Islam Abazi, head of the public prosecution for the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (GOKK), abandoned a criminal investigation into a suspected 167 million‑euro Mazut fraud. The party alleges the case involves money‑laundering, environmental damage and links to senior SDSM and DUI politicians Ali Ahmeti, Zoran Zaev and Venko Filipče.

VMRO‑DPMNE claims the decision to close the file contrasts with a previous request, a year earlier, to detain four suspects for fear they might flee or influence witnesses. The party calls the closure “a scandal” and urges Abazi to resign, asserting that his actions protect political allies and undermine public confidence in the judiciary.

The party also cited a complaint filed by the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and the involvement of public prosecutor Katërina Kolareviќ, who reportedly found no damage despite public reports of financial and ecological harm.
