Macedonian Sashka Stojanovska detained in Montenegro over alleged dog‑killing

The investigative judge of the Basic Court in Ulcinj ordered pre‑trial detention of Sashka Stojanovska, a 43‑year‑old Macedonian citizen, for up to 30 days. She is suspected of killing and maiming a Sharplaninec‑breed dog by running it over with her Mercedes near Teuta boulevard, after the animal allegedly attacked her family and their pet.

The Basic State Prosecutor's Office had previously limited her detention to 72 hours, but the court extended it under article 309 paragraph 1 of Montenegro’s Criminal Code, which criminalises the killing and maiming of animals. The detention is also justified under article 448 paragraph 1 point 1, citing a risk of flight. If convicted, Stojanovska faces a fine or up to two years in prison.

The incident, reported to have occurred on 24 July 2026, was captured on video and widely shared on social media, provoking strong public reaction and calls for swift police action. Authorities located and arrested her on the same day, preventing an alleged attempt to leave Montenegro.
