Macedonia's Energy System Remains Stable Despite Low European River Flows

The Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources (MERMС) says that, although major European rivers such as the Danube and the Rhine are experiencing unusually low water levels, Macedonia’s electricity supply is not at risk. Reservoirs are about 70 % full, providing sufficient hydro‑potential and allowing hydro plants to continue delivering essential system services.

Domestic generation in May reached 462,653 MWh, covering 96.5 % of national consumption. Hydro output rose 76 % compared with the same period last year, while wind generation increased by roughly 10 %. The ministry attributes the improvement to diversification of production capacity, careful reservoir management and ongoing investments in renewables.

Projects under way include the second phase of the 50 MW Bogdanci wind park, new solar farms (Bitola 1, Oslomej 2) and further expansions at Bitola 2 and 3. Gas interconnectors with Greece and Serbia are being built, and Macedonia has received an invitation to join the Vertical Gas Corridor, enhancing regional energy security.
