Former President Stevo Pendarovski told a television interview that, while seeking a parliamentary majority for constitutional changes, discussions took place on how to bring former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski back to Macedonia – either through a pardon or an amnesty law. He said, “Gruevski has only two ways to return: a pardon or an amnesty… the idea would split the VMRO party and help the SDSM win the elections.”

Former Prime Minister and SDSM leader Dimitar Kovachevski later appeared on another program and categorically denied any such talks, stating, “We have never had any conversation or arrangement with any former prime minister about a coalition or political deal.”

The contradictory statements have sparked public debate over possible political engineering within the ruling SDSM‑DUI coalition and raised concerns about the transparency of the constitutional amendment process.
