Macedonia readies French EU proposal, opposition claims secret deal

LSDM member Andrej Zhernovski said the government of Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski is preparing the ground to accept a French proposal on EU accession, citing clear signals from Brussels, Berlin and Paris. He accused the government of trying to present the move as a victory after what the opposition calls a previous lie and betrayal.

The opposition also alleges that Foreign Minister Timcho Muçunski has a secret agreement with the EU to start negotiations, suggesting the deal could involve special conditions or a membership without voting rights. The government denied any hidden pact, stating that talks with European partners are transparent and that there will be no concessions on national identity, language or history.

Both sides claim the other is spreading misinformation, while the issue remains a focal point in Macedonia’s ongoing EU integration process.
