Macedonian party Levica pushes for single electoral unit and diaspora mail voting

Levica spokesperson Boris Krmov said the party is proposing an amendment to Macedonia's electoral law that would create one electoral unit and restrict diaspora voting to postal ballots only for presidential elections. He claimed the ruling VMRO‑DPMNE coalition had accepted the proposal, but expressed suspicion that a behind‑the‑scenes deal limits any change to the unit.

Levica president Dimitar Apasiev, addressing the Constitutional Court, cited the 1986 European Court of Justice decision that unequal state financing of parties breaches fair‑competition standards. He urged that all political subjects receive equal access to public resources and warned that the current system favours established parties.

Opposition figure Mickovski reacted to calls for increased state advertising funds for Levica, suggesting that any extra money for the party should be offset by cuts for others. The remarks are part of a broader debate on electoral‑law reform ahead of upcoming elections.
