Macedonia's new health minister Sasho Klekovski outlines reforms

Former health minister Azir Aliu handed over his duties to the newly elected minister Sasho Klekovski, stating that the systemic processes started under his tenure should continue to be strengthened for the benefit of patients and health workers.

Klekovski announced a 26% increase in the public‑health budget, a 22% rise in salaries for medical staff, and a workforce of about 18,900 employees. He highlighted expanded funding for oncology, pediatrics and neurology, the introduction of generic competition to lower drug prices, and a rise in the capitation fee for family doctors by 33%.

The minister also outlined ongoing projects, including the implementation of electronic prescriptions and the provision of health insurance for children up to 18 years regardless of their parents' coverage. Both initiatives remain pending, awaiting finalisation by the health ministry.
