Macedonia's 'Safe City' programme cuts traffic deaths by 40% in five months

Macedonian government officials announced that the "Safe City" traffic‑safety system has delivered measurable results. In the first five months after full rollout, the number of fatalities in road accidents fell from 55 in the same period last year to 33, a 40% reduction, according to Aleksandar Veljanovski, a spokesperson for the VMRO‑DPMNE party.

The programme, initially launched in Skopje, Tetovo, Kumanovo and on highways 8 and 10 before expanding to Veles, now includes new cameras on the highway near Novo Selo in the Debarca municipality and a phased rollout in Ohrid. Veljanovski said daily traffic violations have stabilised at 500‑600, a drop of more than 99% from the pilot phase, and the government will continue expanding the system and investing in modern safety technologies through 2030.
