Macedonia's 'Safe City' system logs 120,000 traffic violations and cuts road deaths by 40%

North Macedonia's traffic safety programme "Safe City" recorded more than 120,000 traffic violations between 2 February and 22 June 2026, with over 95 % of infractions involving speeding. The system, which uses cameras and automatic detection, was rolled out in Skopje, Tetovo, Kumanovo, and major corridors 8 and 10, and is slated for nationwide implementation by the end of 2026.

Interior Minister Panče Toshićski said the initiative has already reduced traffic‑related fatalities by roughly 40 % – 34 deaths compared with 55 in the same period of the previous year. He also announced plans for a technical solution to identify foreign‑registered vehicles and the creation of a special unit to handle such cases, noting that about 24,000 foreign nationals entered the country through border crossings in the last night‑time period while 32,000 left.

The minister highlighted the system’s contribution to overall road safety and expects the project to become fully operational across the country, covering larger cities and main routes.
