Macedonium monument in Krushevo receives preventive protective measures

Mimoza Христоска, director of the Prilep Institute and Museum, announced that preventive protective measures are being applied to the Ilinjen‑Macedonium monument in Krushevo. Metal grilles have been installed on the galleries to stop water ingress, a step described as a temporary phase before full conservation.

A comprehensive conservation project for the dome is being drafted, covering restoration, repair and rehabilitation in line with heritage‑preservation standards. The monument was declared a cultural asset in danger in November 2025 after more than four decades of damage from climate‑related factors such as water penetration, humidity and biodeterioration, which have threatened the metal structure, glass galleries and interior artwork by Petar Mазев and Borко Лазeски.

The protective works are financed with a budget of about €90,000. The creators’ family, represented by daughter Lira Грабул, protested that they were not consulted and expressed disappointment over the metal grilles. The institute reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard the monument, one of the most significant individually protected cultural sites in Macedonia.
