Maceió begins requalification of historic Praça da Faculdade
The Praça Afrânio Jorge, popularly known as Praça da Faculdade, in the Prado neighborhood of Maceió, is undergoing a major requalification project. Spanning over 16,676 square meters, the renovation aims to recover the historical site and expand leisure and social interaction options for residents.
Mayor Rodrigo Cunha visited the site to monitor progress. The project includes the installation of an interactive fountain, a children's playground, a pet space, a calisthenics gym, picnic areas, and game tables. Improvements to landscaping and public lighting are also planned, alongside new kiosks for vendors.
A sports area, or 'areninha', has already been constructed, featuring a 28 by 38-meter synthetic grass field equipped with fencing and LED floodlights. The square holds significant historical value, having originated in the late 19th century as a clearing in front of the 33rd Hunter Battalion Headquarters. Its popular name stems from the former Faculty of Medicine of Alagoas, which occupied the building that now houses the Natural History Museum of the Federal University of Alagoas (MHN-Ufal).
