Maceió, Brazil experiences two fatal shootings in Vergel and Jatiúca neighborhoods

On July 30, 2024, two separate shootings occurred in the city of Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. In the Vergel do Lago neighborhood, 31‑year‑old municipal cleaner Cristiano William Gowans de Oliveira Balbino was shot multiple times while returning from work and died at the scene. Police say two gunmen carried out the attack; investigators note the victim had a history of drug use and had received threats.

In the Jatiúca neighborhood, 17‑year‑old Gabriel Barbosa Ferreira dos Santos was also shot dead by two men who approached him in a vehicle. He was suspected of involvement in a prior homicide. The shooting left him dead on the sidewalk before medical assistance arrived. Police opened investigations into both incidents, linking them to a recent series of violent attacks in the area, including earlier shootings on July 18 and 20.
