Maceió Brazil Temple groundbreaking set for Oct. 10

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for the Maceió Brazil Temple will take place on Saturday, October 10. Elder B. Corey Cuvelier of the Brazil Area Presidency will preside over the event. The temple will be the sixth LDS house of worship under construction in Brazil, adding to a network that includes temples in Santos, João Pessoa, Londrina, Natal, Ribeirão Prêto and Teresina. Over 1.5 million Latter‑day Saints live in Brazil, congregating in roughly 2,000 local units.

President Dallin H. Oaks highlighted the doctrinal importance of temples, saying, “The doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints centers on the family… Essential to our doctrine on the family is the temple.” The Maceió project follows the April 2022 announcement and joins Brazil’s eleven dedicated temples, with additional sites planned or under construction across the country.

The ceremony underscores the LDS Church’s ongoing expansion in Brazil, where 24 temples have been announced, 11 are operating, and several more are in planning or building stages.
