Maceió driver confirmed intoxicated in fatal child hit-and-run

Blood tests conducted by the Alagoas Scientific Police have confirmed that José Hilton Daltro, 53, had alcohol concentrations above the legal limit at the time of a fatal accident in Vergel do Lago, Maceió.

On September 13, Daltro lost control of a Ford Fiesta, mounted a sidewalk, and struck two children. The collision resulted in the death of 2-year-old Marcos Antônio at the scene. His 4-year-old sister was injured but survived. Following the incident, angry residents confronted and assaulted Daltro with stones and wood; he died from his injuries at the scene.

Forensic experts noted that while high alcohol concentrations are linked to impaired motor coordination and perception, subsequent toxicology screens for medications, pesticides, and other controlled substances returned no results other than ethanol.
