Maceió expands pneumococcal vaccine access for seniors

The Maceió Health Secretariat is expanding the availability of the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (VPC20) through the Unified Health System (SUS). Starting Monday, the vaccine will be offered to individuals aged 85 and older.

The initiative follows technical guidelines aimed at promoting healthy aging and preventing severe forms of pneumococcal disease. Health officials noted that elderly populations face higher risks of complications, hospitalizations, and mortality due to immunosenescence and comorbidities. The disease can lead to respiratory, cardiac, renal, and central nervous system complications.

Eligible residents can access the vaccine at local Health Unit vaccination rooms or designated fixed points, including Pátio Shopping and Maceió Shopping. Citizens are advised to bring their vaccination records and CPF to allow health teams to evaluate their immunization history and determine the appropriate vaccination schedule.
