Maceió health officials promote lung cancer prevention and smoking cessation

In observance of ‘Agosto Branco’, a campaign for lung cancer awareness and prevention, the Maceió Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) is highlighting the importance of combating smoking. The initiative aims to expand public access to specialized care through Smoking Cessation Centers, which serve as vital tools in reducing the risk factors associated with lung cancer.

In Maceió, 11 health units provide specialized support for individuals looking to quit both traditional cigarettes and electronic devices. The service includes professional guidance through individual or group sessions and, when medically indicated, pharmacological treatment.

Access to these services is available via spontaneous demand. To begin treatment, residents must visit one of the participating units with identification, proof of residence, and a SUS card. No prior referral from another health professional is required. Technical lead Laís Porangaba stated that the program offers continuous care tailored to the specific needs of each user.
