Maceió joins UN disaster resilience initiative

Maceió has officially joined the ‘Making Cities Resilient 2030’ (MCR-30) initiative, a project led by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). Mayor Rodrigo Cunha signed a letter of commitment to implement actions aimed at reducing disaster risks and strengthening the city's capacity to respond to extreme weather events.

The Institute for Research, Planning, and Urban and Environmental Licensing (IPLAM) has been designated as the coordinating body for these resilience actions. The city will apply the ‘Ten Principles for Building Resilient Cities,’ beginning with an assessment of its current progress within the initiative's roadmap.

Urban planning in Maceió will now incorporate territorial risk assessments, including the mapping of ravines, slopes, and flood-prone areas, to guide safe urban growth and improve existing occupied areas.
