Archaeologist Tânia Andrade Lima shot during robbery in Rio
Tânia Andrade Lima, an 81-year-old archaeologist and retired professor from the National Museum (UFRJ), was shot three times during an attempted robbery in the Leblon neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon as she was leaving a bank on Rua General Venâncio Flores.
Security footage shows a suspect attempting to snatch her bag, causing her to fall to the sidewalk, after which shots were fired. She was struck in the neck, shoulder, and hand. While the injuries to her neck and shoulder were not considered grave, the wound to her hand required significant medical attention. She was treated at the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital before being transferred to a private facility.
Andrade Lima is a prominent figure in Brazilian archaeology, notably leading the excavations that discovered the Cais do Valongo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Civil Police have identified one of the suspects and are investigating the case. Two suspects fled the scene on a stolen motorcycle, which was later recovered by police near the Rebouças Tunnel.
