Macerata geomorphological mapping launched to address landslide and flood risks
The University of Camerino’s Geology Section, acting through the Marche Region, has signed an agreement with the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) to create the CARG geomorphological sheet n. 303 for Macerata. This project aims to integrate scientific knowledge and cartography to more accurately identify areas exposed to geological hazards, providing a tool for territorial planning.
The initiative follows recent severe weather events in the Marche region, including storms, landslides, and coastal erosion. Data from the 2025 ISPRA Report and University of Camerino surveys indicate a high level of vulnerability in the region. Marche has recorded over 42,500 landslides, with a density of approximately 442 phenomena per 100 square kilometers—more than double the national average.
Approximately 90,000 people live or work in buildings located in landslide-prone areas, and 11.5% of the regional territory is exposed to flood risk. These factors, combined with high seismic risk across much of the region due to its geological structure, underscore the necessity of improved geomorphological mapping to manage natural risks and urban development.
