Macerata road crash kills 20‑year‑old Nicolas Calabrese, leaves four injured
A head‑on collision on a highway near Macerata left 20‑year‑old Nicolas Calabrese and 41‑year‑old driver Christian Perugini dead. Six other young occupants of a Fiat Punto – Daniele Francalancia, Giorgio Franceschini, Michele Calcagni and Simone Bracaccini – were seriously injured; Franceschini later died after brain‑death was declared.
The tragedy prompted a massive community response. Around 500 people gathered in the church of San Vincenzo Maria Strambi in Piediripa for a prayer vigil, holding candles and receiving support from mayor Sandro Parcaroli and local clergy. The local football club Vigor Macerata and the broader sports community mourned Calabrese, a celebrated player who had recently helped the team win a championship.
Authorities continue investigations into the causes of the crash while the injured remain under intensive care. Funeral arrangements for the victims have yet to be scheduled pending judicial proceedings.
