Macerata Humanities Festival opens with Colm Tóibín

The fourth edition of the Macerata Humanities Festival, organized by the University of Macerata, begins on Tuesday, October 13. This year’s theme is “Beyond the law of force. Value of knowledge, knowledge of values,” focusing on contemporary issues such as war, artificial intelligence, human rights, and sustainability.

The festival opens with Irish author Colm Tóibín, who will receive an honorary degree from the University. The ceremony at Cinema Italia will include remarks from the Irish Ambassador to Italy, Elizabeth McCullough, and writer Mario Fortunato, followed by a dialogue between Tóibín and Rector John McCourt. The evening will feature a screening of the film “Brooklyn,” based on Tóibín’s novel.

The program continues through Friday, October 16, featuring various experts. On Wednesday, neuroscientist Vittorio Gallese is scheduled to discuss the biological foundations of cooperation and relationships. Other scheduled participants include botanist Stefano Mancuso and actress Paola Minaccioni.
