Rome to host national climate change demonstration on December 5
The national climate demonstration ‘La Terra chiamò’ is scheduled to take place on December 5 at Piazza del Popolo in Rome. Promoted by a coalition including ASviS, Greenpeace Italia, Legambiente, and WWF Italia, the event aims to return the climate crisis to the center of public debate following the extreme weather events of the summer of 2026.
The program features scientific experts, local administrations, and testimonies from individuals affected by extreme heat. The organizers have outlined four primary demands for the Italian government and political forces: prioritizing climate as a national security issue, accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, enhancing territorial adaptation, and applying the ‘polluter pays’ principle to fund the transition.
The event follows reports published in Nature Health indicating that over 50,000 excess deaths due to heat occurred in European cities during the summer of 2026, with Italy recording the highest absolute number at an estimated 13,303 deaths.
