Macerata Province landfill site selection sparks political controversy

The provincial waste authority (ATA) of Macerata held an assembly to vote on the location of a new support landfill. Opposition parties claim the original technical ranking, compiled by the University of Marche, was overridden with newly‑introduced political criteria, moving Montefano from 15th to first place. Centre‑right mayors are accused of voting to concentrate the landfill in municipalities governed by the centre‑left, prompting heated accusations of institutional bullying.

Pollenza mayor Mauro Romoli rejected rumours that his town sought financial compensation for hosting the site, condemning the “political manoeuvre” that lifted Montefano, Pollenza and Loro Piceno to the top three positions. He pledged to fight the decision through political, technical and judicial channels. The assembly also approved a higher eco‑indemnity for Cingoli, raising its annual compensation to over €1 million. Citizens and local officials have staged protests and indicated plans to lodge appeals.
