Machala judicial building bomb attack prompts telework for staff
An explosive device detonated at the Unidad Judicial Especializada contra la Violencia a la Mujer in Machala on the night of Sunday, 26 July 2026. The blast caused material damage to the recently inaugurated building but no injuries were reported.
Authorities recovered leaflets at the scene that were attributed to the criminal group Los Lobos Espejos. The leaflets demanded the release of Michael Jiménez Reyes, alias “Jocker”, and threatened three judges in the province of El Oro.
In response, the Council of the Judicatura ordered the judicial staff to work remotely (telework) as a precaution while security assessments and investigations by the National Police and the Grupo de Intervención y Rescate (GIR) continue.
