Machelen intersection to reopen following redesign

The intersection of Kerklaan and Woluwelaan (R22) in Machelen is scheduled to reopen to all traffic on Tuesday morning, September 8, 2026. The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer) has completed the redesign of the intersection to improve safety and visibility.

The new traffic light system is designed to be conflict-free, providing separate green lights for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Woluwelaan without encountering vehicular traffic. While car traffic can resume full access to both the Machelen center and the adjacent commercial zone, some secondary works will continue in the coming weeks. These include the removal of a temporary crossing to the former Makro site and the completion of bus stops and bicycle paths. These remaining tasks are expected to be carried out from the bus lane and should not impact car traffic, though cyclists will continue to follow existing detours.
